Public speaking courses and speech ideas…You can’t have one without the other

One of the most disheartening, frustrating and irritating aspects of writing a presentation is coming up with a novel speech idea.

For example: a friend asks you to be the best man at their wedding. Two days before the happy event, because their original best man was swept away by giant waves after a boating accident. And all of his carefully prepared notes for the speech with him.

While you may be slightly upset about having been the second choice, you still want to dazzle the happy couple and the audience with your oratory skills.

The only question now is how you’re going to go about doing this.

How are you going to produce a captivating speech topic?

Brilliant speech ideas which pave the way for effective speaking that wows the audience are different to the run of the mill “I’ve run around with John since we were in kindergarten…” etc. etc. etc.

Dull…! Mind numbingly tiresome…

The people in the party want to be amused. To have fun. And they want to celebrate the newlyweds.

You may be wondering how you can come up with good speech ideas, make your speech different.

Let me give you my personal formula for coming up with a great speech:

I begin by introducing myself and telling the audience what I’m going to be talking about. I keep this part as short as possible because I’m not a celebrity, they’re not especially interested in me. They want to be entertained and educated. After that I thank thank them for being there. Acknowledge them.

If anyone has made huge efforts to attend, I give them special mention.

Such as: “…and I really want to thank the groom’s cousin Bobby and his daughter Sue who came here all the way from Tierra del Fuego in their trusty old stage coach pulled by their team of andalucian mules. It was one tough time crossing the Gulf of Mexico under cover of darkness to avoid thepirates. We all really appreciate their gifts of fine beer from Paraguay”

Even if the happy pair don’t have a relative Bobby from Tierra del Fuego, you can still  ask him to identify himself, as the mules have fouled the road outside ….and the time is up on their parking meter.

Now it’s time to get your audience interested. You would explain how you came to be there, before them, teeth chattering while you tremble in fear. You explain how the groom’s first choice for the position of best man isn’t available to be here today. Express condolences to his widow, parents and children.

The next thing  I do is tell the audience that I’m going  to make the afternoon more interesting by telling them about, the hay barn and what happened at summer camp last year .( Please, please remember to smile at this point or you may be torn apart by the crowd)

By this time, the crowd is all ears, sitting on the edge of their seat, waiting to get the inside line on the scandal. I then proceed to tell everyone how lucky the bride and groom are and tell them that I’ll get to the hay barn story later on.

I’ll tell the guests about the fine families of the bride and groom, the virtues of their upbringing, that they are fine hard working people and what wonderful people they are.

Make mention of little acts of kindness carried out by the happy couple. The good works they do, the work they did with the local community, or any other good deeds they have performed.

This is the part where you express your appreciation to them for letting you share the same planet. 

I would then ask the gathered guests to raise their glasses in a toast, offer your best wishes for a happy future to the newly weds, wishing them much success, many healthy offspring  and a good and happy life together. I will also wish them financial success to be able to afford the children.

Have you seen the price of diapers theses days…?

Once all the traditional parts of your speech are dispensed with, I’ll then say, “Oh, by the way… the hay barn… summer camp… last year! John’s construction company made a fine job of building it and all the kids are really grateful to him for building it.”

The hay barn is an example of an embedded loop.

If it worked for Dallas, it’ll work for you. Does anyone really know who shot JR? I’m sure that, like me, you’re still wondering “Whodunnit”.

Through your knowledge of your audience, you can easily come up with an attention-grabbing cliff hanger.

Perhaps you have to go for a job interview and you want to impress the interview panes with your expert knowledge and skills…

…or you give a professional, accomplished and expert speech to your work team or to
management in your company in an engaging way…

…or you even speak to a large audience with passion and self-assurance…

Public speaking is a key skill that you will need to get a rise or even land a job. And ideally, you want to be relaxed, confident and persuasive.

In reality, though, you may not be feeling quite so assured, confident and relaxed. Your nerves may be playing up, or you may be terrified of public speaking while just contemplating your presentation.

Perhaps you’re very accustomed to public speaking fear if you’ve given any presentations or done any public speaking. You’re standing in front of your audience and all of a sudden you observe all sorts of strange things in your body.

I have often wondered why it was that when I was standing in front of people some years ago, my hands started to sweat, my knees threatened to give, my stomach was a bunch of knots, and when I was finally speaking I didn’t breathe anymore. And then I was breathless after a couple of sentences, and I had to stop and take big gulps of air.I was aiming for a professional, calm and relaxed impression, and I got anything but.

When I went to interviews the same thing happened.

And even when I attended training courses and we had to give a short introduction to ourselves, our names and why we were there, I felt the same.

In those situations, I used to sit there, listening to all the others being so confident, and thinking desperately what great things I could say. And when it was my time, in a split second I got hot and cold, my breathing stopped, and my voice was croaking.

It was not surprising that I used to hate training courses, workshops and especially introductions at the start.

Well, not anymore, because I learned to get over the fears that come over us when speaking to an audience.

One of my big fears was that everybody listening would be judging me. I was worried what they would think of me. I would look at all their faces, when I wasn’t gulping air and being a quivering mess, and would notice that some people would watch me closely and critically.

What a relief it was when I noticed that my audience was listening intently to what I was saying and were waiting for more.

And I realised that when I was focusing on my audience and what they are interested in, and I was able to engage them with what I was talking about, it became easy and very enjoyable to talk about something I was passionate about.

It wasn’t important anymore that I was feeling a little nervous, that my hands trembled slightly, or that I forgot what I was going to say. Because I knew my audience didn’t actually notice.

The next time you need to give a presentation, or you go to a job interview, one key tip to reduce your public speaking fear is to prepare beforehand. You will feel more confident when you know what you’re going to say, even at an interview.

Another thing you can do to stay calm is to remember to breathe. And take a couple of deep breaths before you start. Slow down when you talk and pause at the end of the sentence.

It may sound too slow for you, but for your audience it will be just right because they will have time to understand what you’re saying. And it will give you time to breathe.

These two effective methods, and many others, will help to reduce your public speaking fear and you will feel much more assured and in control of what your saying and how you say it.

The other thing that will help you immensely, of course, is to do any one of a number of good public speaking courses.

Before you write the first word of your speech or presentation, here are a couple of ideas. By following these steps, the chances of capivating your audience are much greater.

I am assuming that you already have confident public speaking skills after completing some public speaking courses.

To create the greatest effect you must first decide what objective you want to get with the  speech.

Is the purpose of your public speaking event to teach , add fun, promote a product, or is it for a contest ?

Knowing this will help you to refine your focus when  deciding on your public speaking topics.

Knowing your audience is crucial . If you have knowledge of what they want or are hoping to learnfrom your event, your job will be so much easier.

Other useful information to have is things like how old your audience is, income levels, employment status, and anything else you can discover .

Knowing this allows you to create a laser like message that will resonate with the needs, fears and hopes of your attendees.

Prior to proceeding any further, it is critical to emphasise how much more masterful you will seem to your audience appear to be the thought leader in the topic of your speech.

A way to get expert status is to spend some time in the library, reading all of the books available on your subject matter. You don’t have to read them cover to cover.By the time you have spent a weekend you will be more of an expert than the majority of the people on the planet.

This is simply because once they have left education something in the region of 92% of the population will never pick up a book again. Shocking data but you can use it to your advantage…

Once you have chosen your public speaking topics, draft out your presentation using bullet points to start, then fill in the spaces in between. This will form your first draft. Be mindful of the need to write current , targeted information and, if it feels right, use some jokes as well.

However, if you are presenting to the national association of mortuary workers, it would probably be best not to tell thestory about the nun and the coffin.

Once you have your first draft written out, recite what you have written to a friendly ear. As you read, observe whether you have held their interest. If they fidget or are distracted, make a note of the place where the loss of interest occurred. These are the parts of your presentation that will need editing and polishing.

When you next present to your friendly ear, use someone else and see if the response is improved.

When you can read your speech through from beginning to end whilst still holding the attention of your audience of one, it’s a pretty good sign

Persuasive Speech Topics: The effortless way to plan what to say

Writing an informative speech often starts off as a daunting task. Before writing your presentation you should do some research. Persuasive topics will usually demand more thought than run of the mill topics. You should not only think of something that is interesting and that will grab your audience’s interest. It’s also good to know, beforehand , how relevant your speech ideas are to what your audience needs to know.

You can choose a contrarian position as a way to stimulate interest.

Selecting a persuasive topic isn’t always as easy as it sounds. Your selection of topic will determine if your audience will be touched , moved and uplifted by you…or merely numbed out. An inappropriate topic choice may get you a result you didn’t anticipate.

So you can be sure that you select an effective and persuasive topic,  here are a few tips how to choose an interesting and persuasive speech topic.

1) Be aware of what’s currently happening in the world

You should “know your stuff”. Keep track of current events. Become an expert by watching the news and reading good quality newspapers. This way you will receive even more trustworthiness from speaking about hot news items that interest your attendees. Because they are popular topics the audience will be more inclined to listen attentively to your presentation. Be more discriminating about what you watch as what you put your attention on is what you will become. If you don’t want to remain the same “old you” but want to be interesting you should to be very circumspect about the quality of the information you allow into your mind.

Another more modern resource is the Internet. There are a large number of research resources such as Google news.and friend feed. Both of these resources are searchable by simply entering a key word term. 

Between the web and TV with its hundreds if not thousands of channels you will be spoiled for choice in your hunt for persuasive speech topics.

2) Know your subject matter and be relaxed and confident about your speech

One of the keys of writing a brilliant presentation is your choice of topic. Select a topic you you know something about. The next and possibly even more important thing to consider is that your audience should also be interested in your subject matter…It doesn’t matter how enthralling you find your subject, if it doesn’t interest your audience they will not hear you or listen to you. In fact, if you’re not careful you might get the reputation as being able to cure insomnia.

This is one big area where I observe so many people going astray. Your audience is there to be entertained or educated. That’s it! When you give them information that they can benefit from or laugh about you will create a far more powerful impact . AND you will be remembered!

3) Listen to great speakers and model what they do.

One of the most powerful keys to success, in any area of your life, is when you copy or model great people. If you can get one of them to mentor you or tutor you then grab the opportunity without hesitation.

The world public speaking champion, Darren LaCroix used toastmasters as a means to polish and hone his technique. Often he would attend three toastmasters meetings in one night.  This also gave him a big advantage because he was getting lots of feedback on ways that he could improve his speaking skills.

Get educated… Select any one of a number of public speaking courses that are available. They range from toastmasters to a multitude of other courses that you can attend in further education institutions and on-line.

Choosing your persuasive topics is just the first step in becoming a confident, powerful public speaker. You will not become this overnight. Like everything else it will take practise and work.

I spent the first twenty-two years of my life having to cope with a stuttering problem. This as you may imagine had a major, negative, impact on my overall self-esteem and self-confidence. I was constantly accepting second best in life and was often in a depressed state of mind. I was less than impressed with the hand of cards that I had been dealt and was full of self pity. I believed, in my negative way, that I would struggle at the dating game, I would struggle to forge a successful career and that I would therefore have a rather unhappy future. What was the point? Where was the hope? Why should I get out of bed in the morning? These were questions that I asked myself on a regular basis. I became in a form of rut and could see no way out.

It was not until my early twenties that I was to emerge out of this negativity. No longer was I going to accept second best, no longer was I going to be a depressive, no longer was I going to fear social situations and no longer was I going to be a loner.

So what was the catalyst to my new found strength? Well alcohol of all things is the answer to this question. Since the age of seventeen, or possibly even sixteen, I had been consuming vasts amounts of alcoholic drink. When intoxicated I could speak as fluently as the next man, I was happy, I was fearless, I was confident and I was care-free. Now do not worry the solution to your confidence and self-esteem issues is not to become drunk every night but what had this experience with alcohol taught me? Well quite simply it showed me that I was able to speak fluently and that I could be happy.

I just had to live life when sober as I did when I was drink. For example I had to learn to be far more positive, far more care-free and far more stress-free. I am worthy, I am a nice person and I am clever.

I have also now realised that I have actually been dealt a very good hand of cards, I am one of life’s lucky ones. I have a new found belief that the future should be an exciting and successful one!

I hope that my new found confidence will enable me to be able to help more people to learn how to play the guitar, this is something that is very important to me as it is a great instrument to play.

Firms and organizations place a huge premium on these skills because a good presentation is more often than not the determining factor on whether the firm will gain business or lose business. A good presentation will convince and re-assure investors that there investment is safe and secure. It will convince lending institutions to avail monies for development and win the confidence of other business partners.

Manage your State.  Before you present makes sure you are in your ‘presentation zone’. Remember the times when you presented brilliantly, the times you controlled your audience, the times you influenced decisions, the times the participants learned effortlessly etc. and recall those feelings before you start to present.

Own the message. Always totally own the message of the presentation, make it yours and make it in your own words. You have to be totally comfortable with the content you are presenting to present it with impact. Make sure you practice, practice, practice.

Invest in promotional material. Getting business cards is a necessity, you must have one and carry them with you everywhere. You never know when you will have need arise to share information. Also postcards, banners, flyers, t-shirts, mailers are so useful. Also there are many local classified papers that offer free print ads, as well as, online ads where you can advertise your work. Also if you can wear your product or use it, do so. Many people are curious and may ask where did you buy that, this is an opportunity to promote as well. Don’t be afraid to ask if they are interested in your card and/or may like to visit your website if you have one or go to your next show or event. There is no shame in promotion when done right.

Engage all the Senses. Some people prefer presentations to be primarily visual, some primarily auditory and others primarily through feeling so appeal to all sections of your audience through your use of language, and by structuring the presentation to include visual aids, question and answer sessions and by involvement.

1) First and foremost you have to like yourself, because how can other people like you and respond to you if you are constantly sending out negative vibes to them and the universe. You need to be your  own best friend and give yourself an honest dispassionate assessment of yourself. Stand out of yourself and view from a distance, and make a list of positives (and trust me, there will be many), and negatives also as you see them. If you have a trusted friend to help you, great , enlist their help. Do not stop until you have at least 30 positives. Read them over and over to yourself, praise yourself and let them sink in. Repeated positive affirmation will get through to your subconcious and change you belief system. Forgive yourself for indiscretions and mistakes-you are human, it is all learning, make amends where you can, forgive yourself and move on.

2)  Listen to your mind and body and treat them with respect. Care for your body, do not abuse it in any way. Give it good food and exercise, and take the advice yourself that you would give a best friend that you love and care for. Feed your mind positive thoughts about yourself and your situation. Relax and meditate if you can. Binaural beats are a fast and effective route to complete peace and relaxation. Your perception and attitude is crucial. Happiness is often a decision to be happy, and just a different perception of the same circumstance. Your current thoughts, feelings and attitudes are shaping your future as we speak, so monitor them and do not nurture negative thoughts.

3)  Detach from regularly negative people, they will bring you down with them. You soak up enough negativity from the news, and you should detach from this also at least for a period if it is bringing you down.

4) Organize and declutter  your wardrobe, your living space and your mind. Unnecessary accumulation of material things and disorganization causes stress, so look to simplify your life, and appreciate the natural beauty around you. Determine to be honest and true to yourself and those around you- this will give you greater self respect and the respect of others.

5) Do a little something that you fear each day, perhaps just smile and talk to a new person and step out of your comfort zone a litle. Every little challenge that you meet and master will boost your confidence disproportionately. If you do struggle in social situations as many of us do, consider trying Conversational Hypnosis which will quickly give you the skills  to put people and yourself at ease, and build rapport quickly and easily. Each positive interaction with people will boost your confidence tremendously.

You must be persistent, keep working on things, monitor your thoughts, and always remember the words in Desiderata which I love - “you are a beautiful and unique child of the Universe, and no less than the moon and the stars you have the right to be here!”

Begin overcoming shyness by thinking small.  You can’t learn how to stop being shy all at once.  If you try, you will end up frustrated and under a great deal of pressure.  The best way to approach your issues with shyness is to begin by taking one step at a time.  Make an extensive list of every situation in which you find yourself feeling shy.

Different situations trigger a shy reaction for different people.  Some people simply cannot talk with someone of the opposite sex.  Severely shy individuals may find it difficult to talk to almost anyone.  Just remember, not all situations are equally difficult; therefore, it will require a different amount of effort to overcome each situation.  Short conversations are usually a lot easier than in-depth, soul searching conversations.  Conversations with one individual are usually easier than conversations with a group.  Keep this in mind.

As you keep these things in mind, write down a list of every single situation that causes you to feel shy.  Include everything you can think of.  If talking to family and friends doesn’t make you feel shy, do not include it on your list.  If, however, you get nervous talking to your friends, include that on your list. 

Some shy individuals find it difficult making small talk with a store clerk.  Others can’t stand the thought of having a conversation with the opposite sex.  Identify and sort through your shyness issues.  Then, you will be able to tackle them methodically, one at a time.  Once you identify the first item on your list, resolve to put yourself into a situation involving that area of shyness every single day.

If it makes you feel shy to talk to everyone, then you may need to begin by going into a small store every day and speaking to the clerk.  Also, try to make yourself speak to the people around you in line.  Put yourself in the uncomfortable situation of making conversation whether you want to or not.  This is the best way to begin to make strides in overcoming shyness.
